-- UPCOMING DATES / EVENTS --

Please read the 2010 COACH NOTES tab to the left. It's just a look at expectations across the board for the coming season. This will help us make sure that everyone is aware of specific items for the 2010 team.

-- 1ST WEEK OF PRACTICE -- NORGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL arrive by 5:30p to start

Mon - Aug 2nd - 6p - 8p - Helmets only
Tues - Aug 3rd - 6p - 8p - Helmets and Shoulder Pads
Wed - Aug 4th - 6p - 8p - Helmets and Shoulder Pads
Thurs - Aug 5th - 6p - 8p - Full equipment

-- NORGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL -- parking will be limited. We will be in the middle (closest to the larger Black-Top area). Please do not park around back too close to the fields. The coaches, hauling equipment will be parked back there closest to the fields.

DO NOT PARK ON THE BLACKTOP ... that area is reserved for Cheerleader practice.

This is SCHOOL PROPERTY ... no alcohol, no tobacco use, no firearms, no dogs (not even on a leash). We have enough police officer coaches that we will not tolerate any of this; you'll be asked to leave the premises.

Police your own area ... the coaches are responsible for coaching, not trash pick up after practice, if it's trash and it's on the ground, pick it up and throw it away.

-- HEAT ADVISORY OR THREAT OF RAIN / INCLIMATE WEATHER -- Always plan to come to practice, unless you hear otherwise. We do practice football in the rain, and the heat ... but in the excessive heat as outlined by the VA-HS Guidelines, and not in severe weather.

Please do not call me to ask about practice being cancelled / delayed / postponed / rescheduled because of the "threat of rain or a heat advisory" ... sometimes it rains in Williamsburg and not in Toano ... however, do check your EMAIL frequently.

If practice is post-poned, we will work through our PHONE TREE list from team mom, Wendy Pope, to alert everyone as quickly as we can.

-- MISSING EQUIPMENT -- there are a few back-order helmets, game pants, game sox, and helmet stickers that we couldn't give out at equipment handout days last week. If you are missing a HELMET that was on Back-Order, we hope to have those in and at the practice field on August 2nd. We will also work to get you your back ordered game pants around that same time, but they are not as critical at this point.

-- THINGS TO DO THIS WEEK --

(1) Fit your cleats fit, and break them in if they're new (get arch supports if needed)
(2) Cut / Boil / Fit the mouthpiece you were given (follow directions); attach to helmet
(3) Get used to wearing your helmet
(4) TAPE the back straps of the shoulder pads together so they don't pull out and get lost
(5) Get your practice pants / practice jersey
(6) Get a BIG OLE Water Jug
(6a) Get a sturdy lawn chair for you, cold compress for breads, and bug repellent
(7) Get a chinstrap cover if you need that
(7a) Wash your chinstrap inside of helmet with disinfectant daily to prevent impetigo
(8) Get a heat / moisture removing undershirt
(9) Practice a reasonable bed time hour
(10) Drink plenty of water to re-hydrate
(11) Get outside this last week, and get used to the heat

-- THINGS TO TALK ABOUT THIS WEEK TO YOUR PLAYER --

(a) Be positive, it's fun ... it will be hard though, especially for newer and younger players. The game is faster, and there's a level of intensity not seen at most other youth or rec league sports. We're all trying to make all our kids better at football for the next level up.

(b) Talk about team ... football is a team sport above all else, no matter who the runningback is, if there aren't 10-other kids blocking, your team won't score. No matter your role on the team, do your best 100% of the time, always put forth 100% effort, and never give up.

(c) Follow Coach's Instructions, Be A Good Listener ... players will need to listen to their coaches, and follow directions to become better players. Distractions are not welcome on the football field. If someone is a distraction, they will be called out.

(d) Positions ... there are drills where most everyone will get to run, block, tackle, but everyone is not going to be a runningback, quarterback or middle linebacker ... do your best to earn a position on the team where you can excel and help your team.

(e) Cheer For Your Team Mates ... when one of your team mates does something good, cheer for him, and pat him on the back. Be a good team mate that everyone else wants to be around. Don't taunt, razz, or ridicule any of your team mates for any reason. How would you feel if it were you?

(f) Hustle Everywhere, All The Time, Every Time ... there is NO WALKING AROUND in football. Hustle from one drill to the next! Hustle from the huddle to the Line Of Scrimmage! Hustle from the Water Break back onto the field! And do it full speed. Most coaches are not going to get mad if you do something wrong, but do it full speed. If you do it half-way, they likely will.

-- ABSENCES -- Please email me any upcoming practice dates that you will miss.

-- INFLATION NATION OPENING NIGHT BOUNCE PARTY -- join the WYFCL on Sunday August 1st from 6p - 8:30p at Inflation Nation at 3032 Richmond Road (Patriot's Plaza with Orvin and Lenox) for a season kick-off party and fund-raiser.

The Hornets will take-over Inflation Nation for 2 1/2 hours on Sunday night to romp and stomp and have a good time. Costs are discounted for the event down to $10 per child (bring the younger siblings) ... parents can hang out / mingle and watch for free. The great part of the night is that $5 from every paid child's admission will be donated back to the WYFCL. And the Concessions stand will be opened up for the WYFCL also.

-- PIZZA KIT FUND-RAISER -- At equipment handouts on Saturday, you should have recieved a Pizza Kit Fund-Raising Packet from Fund-Raising Chairman, Steve Tyler. Steve set a goal of 5 kits per child in the league.

But, because we have 36 long-time families and kids on our team, I think an achievable goal for us should be 7 kits per player, to help make up for the slack that other teams will have. Also, the football player and the cheerleader who sell the most kits will each be awarded a bike valued at $250 from Spoke 'N True (the Bike Store near Barnes & Noble in New Town Center). So a nice prize this year as well.

This is our only major effort fund-raiser for the WYFCL, and the league will earn between $5 and $6 per kit sold, so it's a solid money-maker that helps us continue to provide our kids with the best in equipment and facilities throughout the year.

Order forms and sales should be completed and turned in to TEAM MOM ... Wendy Pope ... on Thursday August 5th at practice.

-- POTENTIAL SCRIMMAGE GAME -- Friday August 13th ... 6p - 8p

-- PYFA MANDATORY WEIGH INS -- Saturday August 14th ... weight is unlimited for 10-year olds, but 11-year olds must weigh in at or below 135 lbs. Place & time TBD

-- PYFA JAMBOREE & PYFA WEIGH INS -- Saturday August 21st ... place / time for weigh ins, and opponents and game times TBD.

-- PRACTICES --  Monday August 23rd - Thursday Sept 2nd ... we move to Warhill, continue practicing 4-nights a week (Monday - Thursday), but practice moves to 5:30p - 7:30p ... most coaches will arrive at 5:15p to help organize our facility.

-- 1st REGULAR SEASON GAME -- Saturday August 28th (place / opponent TBD)

-- PRACTICES --  Tuesday Sept 7th... starting on Tuesday September 7th, we drop down to 3-days a week (Tues / Wed / Thurs), and remain at Warhill with practice running from 5:30p - 7:30p ... most coaches will arrive at 5:15p to help organize our facility.
