Hornets Drop Yorktown 25 - 7;
Williamsburg To Play In PYFA Super Bowl
Williamsburg built a commanding 25 - 0 lead, then cruised to a Playoff victory and trip to the PYFA Super Bowl with a 25 - 7 thumping of the Yorktown Patriots.
The Hornets set the tone early on defense. D-linemen, Ar’Mon Jones, Sam Tyler and Russ Schugeld stopped the Patriots advance, leading up to a sack by Zach Pennycuff, one of his four 1st half tackles for loss, forcing a Yorktown punt.
Williamsburg then went on the attack, marching 55-yds on 11-plays for the game's first points.
Cesar Ward & Caden Darber alternated carries on the drive, behind super blocking by Hunter Brummett, Alan Burkett, Kade Campbell and Cameron Chevrier, before Darber connected with Pennycuff on an 11-yd TD pass giving Williamsburg a 6 – 0 lead.
Yorktown started their next series at midfield and went backward 20-yds before punting. Two Darber sacks, and a 12th man raucous crowd induced “illegal procedure” call aided the Hornets-D in the stop.
With just over 2-minutes to go in the half, Marcos Piggot followed blockers Adam O'Neill and CJ Bolt, for a nice 8-yd run up the middle to get the Hornets next scoring drive started. A few plays later, Darber followed suit, running up the gut behind blockers Tadic Mielczarek and Jake Savala for a 16-yd TD run to put the Hornets up 12 - 0 at the break.
Williamsburg's offense stalled to start the 2nd half, but a booming punt by Ryan Creecy, and super special teams coverage, pinned Yorktown at their own 20-yd line.
Hunter Brittain’s nice tackle put the Patriots off balance to start their drive leading to a fumble on their next play that Linebacker Trey Drummond scurried on top for the Hornets.
With great field position for the first time in the game, it only took 3-plays for Darber to find Pennycuff behind the defense for a 16-yd TD pass to give Williamsburg an 18 - 0 3rd quarter advantage.
After the score, the Williamsburg defense was relentless.
Bryant Walker (3-tackles) and Carter Weissenfluh (2-tackles, pass break-up) led the assualt. D-Linemen Jeffrey Shi, Josh Womeldorf and Josh Farley kept the pressure on the Yorktown QB as he tried to lead a comeback. Yorktown moved to the Hornets 12-yd line before Monii Burden & Josh Herslow registered back-to-back tackles for loss to end the Patriot threat.
The Hornet offense then put together another impressive scoring drive, going 57-yds in 8-plays to salt the game away putting Williamsburg up 25 - 0.
Exciting runs by Ryan Jones (3 carreis / 27-yds) and Burden (7 carries / 42-yds) behind strong blocking by Justin Ford, Matthew Prahasky & Zach Pope helped move the ball to the Patriot goal line where Weissenfluh scored on a 1-yd TD plunge behind blockers Clayton Vinson & Michael Burt. Herslow added the PAT bulling his way through tacklers into the endzone.
Yorktown got on the board with less than a minute remaining in the game to make the final 25 - 7.
Williamsburg will now face the Hampton Tornados (11 - 0), 16 - 0 winners of their playoff game against Gloucester-Red, in the PYFA Super Bowl on Saturday November 22nd at York High School's Bailey Field. Kick-Off is slated for 11am.
