Hornets Swamped In Super Bowl;

Fall To Tornados 26 - 6

Hampton took full advantage of every Williamsburg miscue on their way to building a 26 – 6 halftime advantage then rode out the clock in the 2nd half for a 26 – 6 win over the Hornets in the PYFA Super Bowl.

The Hornets offense struggled early generating only one 1st down in their first two possessions, while being forced to punt on both occasions.

Hampton seized both 1st quarter opportunities, scoring once on a 28-yd run, and then again on their 2nd possession on an 11-yd run to take an early 14 – 0 lead. Hornet defenders Hunter Brittain (2-tackles), Joey Hill (2-tackles), Monii Burden (2-tackles) and Sam Tyler (1-tackle) helped slow the Hampton progress.

Williamsburg grabbed some momentum on the ensuing kick-off when Cesar Ward scooped up the bounding kick-off and zipped to the Tornado 30-yd line. From there Caden Darber (90-yds rushing) carried 3-times to move the ball to the Hampton 12-yd line.

Then when the Tornado defense stiffened, in the first of two twists, as Williamsburg was heading into the endzone a Hampton player snagged a bobbling ball and motored to the Hornet 5-yd line … only extra effort by Zach Pennycuff chasing down the defender saved the touchdown.

The reprieve was short-lived however. Stops by Ar’Mon Jones (10-tackles on the day), and Ryan Jones (4-tackles on the day) stalled the onslaught momentarily before Hampton added a third score to go up 20 – 0.

Then, Williamsburg got on the scoreboard.

Darber followed right side blockers Jake Savala, Tadic Mielczarek and Hunter Brummett on a pair of 20-yd carries then snuck in from 1-yd out behind blocks by Alan Burkett and Kade Campbell to put the Hornets on the board, trailing 20 – 6.

The Hornets got another chance after the kick off when Trey Drummond pounced on a Hampton fumble giving Williamsburg the ball at the Tornado 26-yd line with 45-seconds to go in the half, and one timeout to work with.

Looking to what had thrilled Hornets fans all year, Williamsburg went to a hurry-up 2-minute pass attack, but the plan back-fired resulting in a Hampton “pick-6” score that sent the Hornets into intermission down 26 – 6.

Hampton effectively chewed up the 3rd quarter clock aided by two Hornet muffed punts that the Tornados recovered, while Williamsburg’s lone 3rd quarter offensive possession resulted in a fumble.

In the 4th period, the Hornets offense was able to reel off 15-plays moving to the Tornados 15-yd line. Runners Marcos Piggott, Carter Weissenfluh, Josh Herslow and Cameron Chevrier carried the ball for Williamsburg behind blockers Cooper Minor, Adam O’Neill, CJ Bolt, Justin Ford and Michael Burt.

Defensively, Williamsburg limited Hampton’s 4th quarter effort to a scant 6 plays that included a fumble recovered by Josh Herslow and crunching tackles leveled by Garrett Turner, Clayton Vinson, Zach Pope and Bryant Walker.
