Game Summary (November 8, 2008)

HORNETS NEED OT TO SUBDUE SPIDERS;

WILLIAMSBURG WINS A WET ONE 13 - 6

Trailing 6 – 0 in the 4th quarter, Williamsburg scored late to force overtime, nearly scored on the game's last play to win in regulation, then sloshed through the mud and rain to a 13 – 6 OT win againt a stout Ruell-Blair team.

Early in the 4th quarter, the Hornets went the distance in 9-plays to knot the game 6 – 6. Runningbacks Caden Darber (99-yds) and Cesar Ward (78-yds) ran behind blockers Alan Burkett and Hunter Brummett on the scoring drive.

Williamsburg's defense, which had 15-tackles for loss, and only allowed one play longer than 3-yds in the game, then forced the Spiders to punt. Defensive End Zach Pennycuff, in on an astounding 12-tackles during the game, helped force the 3-and-out series.

Then, with less than 2-minutes and no timeouts, the Hornets no-huddle offense ran 10-plays to move from their own 30-yd line to the Spiders’ goal. The drive featured big pass receptions by Ryan Jones (15-yds) & Pennycuff (8-yds) and was aided by several of the 10 Ruell-Blair offsides penalties, a late-hit, unsportsmanlike conduct and player ejection … but it ended with an incomplete pass into the endzone as time expired.

In OT, Darber scored from 2-yds out, then added the PAT running behind front men Tadic Mielczarek & Jake Savala as Williamsburg built a 13 – 6 lead.

Defenders Ar’Mon Jones (6-tackles), Russ Schugeld, Chris Humphries, Hunter Brittain (3-tackles each) then squashed the Spiders last effort in OT. Joey Hill, Sam Tyler, Marcos Piggott and Trey Drummond also registered tackles on the day.

The Mighty Mites are the #3 seeded playoff team, and will face the Yorktown Patriots (9 - 1) on Saturday November 15th at Gloucester's Page Middle School Field.
