Hornets On Short End Of 7 - 0

Defensive Battle With Yorktown

In a battle of what might be two of the league’s best defenses, the Hornets dropped a brutal 7 – 0 decision to Yorktown.

The Hornets defense faced 30-plays from an explosive Yorktown offense. Williamsburg held serve forcing 6 incomplete passes, 11 rushes that went for  -79-yds, and 2 punts as the Hornets "D" kept the game close throughout.

Defender Joey Hill shined with 7-tackles. One amazing play came in the 2nd quarter when Hill chased down a Yorktown ball-carrier who had a 20-yd head start, avoided a blocker en route, and caught the Patriot runner at the Hornets' 7-yd line.

Backs to the wall, Hill and Zach Pennycuff (3-stops) checked the Patriots at the goal line on the next play. Inspired, Chris Humphries, Ryan Creecy (3-tackles) and Ar’Mon Jones (3-tackles) then registered 3 tackles in succession for losses to keep the score 0 - 0 at the half.

Early, the Hornets pounded out a 9-play drive moving to the Patriots 16-yd line. Caden Darber (11-runs / 31-yds) and Cameron Chevrier (9-runs / 24-yds) carried the load, but the drive stalled, and Williamsburg ran just 3 more plays in the half.

Williamsburg started the 2nd half wtih a 10-play, clock eating drive, but couldn't find the endzone.

Following that Hornets possession, Yorktown tallied the game's only points on a well-timed, unexpected Quarterback sneak that went for a 35-yd touchdown.

Sam Tyler & Darber (4-tackles each) helped keep Yorktown in check. Ryan Jones and Russ Schugeld chipped in 2 stops a piece as the defenses traded field possession.

The Hornets were given a final opportunity to score from the Yorktown 19-yard line mid-way through the 4th quarter, but Williamsburg couldn’t do anything with their final scoring chance.
