vs Gloucester-Red 11.13.09 (Playoffs)

Hornets Dodge Red-Knights Last Charge; Hang On For 14 - 12 Win And PYFA Superbowl Appearance

In a repeat playoff match up from 2-years ago, with virtually all the same chess pieces in tact, Williamsburg held off a last minute charge by the Gloucester-Red Knights with less than a minute to go in the game to hold on for a 14 - 12 Playoff victory and earn the right to play in the PYFA Superbowl.

Williamsburg set the tone of the game early, opening with a nice drive to the Gloucester 10-yd line. Monii Burden (18-carries / 85-yds) had a couple of big first down runs behind blockers Cooper Minor and Clayton Vinson who opened up the running lanes.

The Hornets-D then entered the battle. Defensive End Hunter Brittain rallied the troops with 2 of his team leading 7-tackles. Bryant Walker (6-tackles) stepped up his game, as he and Josh Womeldorf combined on a drive ending stop giving Williamsburg the ball back at the Gloucester 12-yd line.

Williamsburg needed just one-play to move on top as Burden followed the blocks of Tadic Mielczarek and Adam O'Neill as he zipped through a hole in the line and went 12-yds for the game's first score. Cesar Ward (13-carries / 52-yds) leaped forward for the PAT behind a nice block by Kade Campbell to put the Hornets up 7 - 0.

Gloucester then took over and moved the ball to the Hornets 25-yd line. Linebacker Zach Pope (6-tackles) stepped up and played a role in 4-tackles on consecutive plays, the last one on 4th down, as he stuffed the Red-Knight runner to give the ball back to the Hornets.

Williamsburg muddled that offensive possession giving the ball back on downs immediately to Gloucester.

D-lineman Tyler Neville (4-tackles) was in the Red-Knight backfield to slow the charge, while Burden (5-tackles) helped hold the outside in check. Carter Weissenfluh (5-tackles) had a big stop on a runner who broke free up the middle, but in the end, Gloucester got in for a score. On the vital PAT try though Neville & Burden combined again to allow the Hornets to preserve a slim 7 - 6 lead at halftime.

The Hornets got a huge break to start the 2nd half as Michael Burt (5-tackles) fought and clawed until he finally recovered the Hornets onsides kick-off giving Williamsburg the ball at mid-field.

Ward & Burden then alternated turns moving the ball downfield. Helpful blocks by Tori Roggenbuch, Joey Cianciotti and Ben Tyler advanced the assault along the way, until Burden was able to blast over from the 1-yd line. Ward added another critical PAT to give Williamsburg a 14 - 6 lead.

Gloucester-Red wouldn't go away though. But neither would Hornet Cornerback Garrett Turner who turned in a monster play, as he corralled and flipped a Gloucester back causing a fumble and mad scramble for the loose ball. When the dust settled, amazingly the Red-Knights retained possesion, but faced a long 4th down call. Turner again stepped up registering another huge solo tackle to end the drive.

Williamsburg took over, and mustered an 8-play drive that saw the quarter change along the way. As the drive continued mid-way through the 4th quarter, the Hornets moved to the Gloucester 16-yd line.

From there, Pope snared a Ward pass for a 15 7/8-yd gain on 2nd down setting up the Hornets to salt the game away on the Red-Knight goal line. But, the Hornets couldn't stuff the pigskin home on 2 tries, and turned the ball back to Gloucester in the shadow of their own goalposts with 4-minutes to go.

Gloucester generated a pair of hard-earned 1st downs moving to their own 25-yd line. Then, on a crucial 4th and 11 play, bottled lightening finally escaped, as the speedy Red-Knight back, who had been largely contained throughout the game, broke free for a 55-yd scoring run.

Gloucester set up to kick the potential game-tying 2-point conversion, but the ball was batted away by Walker and sailed wide allowing Williamsburg to retain a 14 - 12 lead with 3 1/2 minutes remaining.

Making the tension more palpable, Gloucester then recovered their ensuing on-sides kick-off at mid-field and had another shot to score.

Josh Farley, Neville and Walker helped cause a muffed exchange on 1st down, and a swarm of Hornets created havoc on the 2nd down Gloucester effort to bring up a 3rd and 9 situation.

Sitting on all the pins and needles, again Walker, with help from Weissenfluh, burst through the line to wrap up the Red-Knight back for a 4-yd loss creating a 4th and long play.

With 90-seconds left and the game on the line, Josh Herlsow (5-tackles) delivered a crushing "turn-off-the-lights" tackle stopping the Gloucester back in his tracks and giving the ball back to Williamsburg to run out the clock and the remainder of the game.

The Hornets (10 - 1) will now face the winner of the Yorktown (10 - 0) vs Poqouson (8 - 2) playoff game in the PYFA Superbowl on November 21st at Warhill Stadium in Williamsburg.
