Hornets Finish Regular Season 9 - 1; Shut-Out Gloucester-White 20 - 0
Williamsburg used stout defensive play, limiting Gloucester-White to just 4-plays of positive yardage, as the Hornets shut-down the White-Knights to enter the PYFA Playoffs with a 20 - 0 victory, and 9 - 1 record.
Josh Herslow made a nice grab of the game's opening kick-off, and rumbled for 8-yds to start the game. Hunter Pegram carried on 1st down, and Cesar Ward had a few nice carries behind stellar offensive line blocking by Kade Campbell, Cooper Minor and Trent Neville.
But the slippery ball made the Hornets-O look like they were participating in a "greased pig contest" as Williamsburg committed three 1st half turnovers, via fumble.
Defensively, Monii Burden helped hold the White Knights in check as he was in on 6-tackles. Michael Burt and Zach Pope both were credited with 4-stops on the day, while Clayton Vinson and Hunter Brittain both had 3-solid hits on White Knight runners. Defender Garrett Turner was on the spot on the three White-Knight pass attempts preventing any aerial hijinks.
Burden made the most of his offensive day, going 35-yds on his only carry of the contest for the Hornets first score. Upfront blocks by Tadic Mielczarek, and Adam O'Neill sprung the run free from the line, then Burden made a nice cut on a downfield block by Brittain to cruise into the endzone. Ward added the PAT for a 7 - 0 Hornets advantage that stood until halftime.
In the 2nd half, Williamsburg's defense pushed Gloucester backward initially.
Tyler Neville (6-tackles) delivered the big blow when he chased down the Gloucester QB and pulled him down for a 10-yd loss. Josh Farley (2-tackles), Josh Womeldorf and Carter Weissenfluh also delivered hits on the stand.
In the 2nd half, holding to the slim 7 - 0 lead, Williamsburg's offense played well.
The Hornets quickly capitalized generating a pair of first downs, as Ryan Pastirik and TJ Davis moved the ball to the White-Knight goal line. A holding penalty set the Hornets back, but on 3rd and goal, Pastirik burst through a gaping hole in the line created by blocks from Bryant Walker, Guenter Mueller and Jonathon Tarpley to go 20-yds for TD, pushing the Hornets up 13 - 0 in the 3rd period.
Defensively Williamsburg used a pair of nice tackles by Chase Dively, and Jeremy Herslow, and Ben Tyler's presense in the middle, to create more lost yardage for the White Knights and give the ball back to the Hornets at the Gloucester 20-yd line.
Carries by Zach Stallings and Nick Doyle brought up a 4th down situation where Pastirik set up in the pocket and threw a spiralling shot to Dively who hauled the pass in, and muscled forward to the 1st down chains. From there, Davis (5-carries / 24-yds) had two nice runs up the middle behind blockers Mickey Smith, Joey Cianciotti and Tori Roggenbuch to get in for the score. Tyler Neville added the PAT to give Williamsburg the 20 - 0 win.
