Hornets Sweep Past Tornados; Williamsburg Wins 26 - 6 Over Hampton
In a battle of two undefeated teams, Williamsburg executed soundly on both sides of the ball while limiting Hampton's potent threats in the Hornets 26 - 6 victory over the Tornados.
Williamsburg set the tone early as Monii Burden (18-carries / 105-yds) cut off Tadic Mielczarek's block and raced down the sidelines for a nice 21-yd gain. Cesar Ward (14-carries / 77-yds) followed that up with a 14-yd run behind gaurd Adam O'Neil moving the ball to the Hampton 12-yd line before the drive stalled.
The Hornets defense gave no ground. Josh Herslow was a tackler on fire in the opening series, getting in on all 3-stops in Hampton's opening posession on his way to an outstanding 9-tackle day. Equally as impressive was Josh Farley, who teamed with Herslow on all three opening plays, en route to his best game of the year with 4-tackles.
Hampton was forced to punt, but the Hornets kept coming as Williamsburg needed just 2 plays to score as Burden powered into the endzone behind blocker Kade Campbell, then added the PAT to put Williamsburg in an unfamiliar position versus Hampton ... ahead 7 - 0.
Hunter Brittain helped make sure that Hampton's next offensive series went the same as the first. Brittain tallied 2 sacks resulting in nearly 20-yds of losses that forced Hampton to punt again.
Williamsburg needed just 6-plays from midfield to hit paydirt as Burden kept his balance, shaking off tacklers after he burst through the line behind blocker Clayton Vinson, on an 18-yd scoring run to put Williamsburg in control 14 - 0 early in the 2nd quarter.
Brittain & Burden combined defensively on a couple more negative yardage plays on Hampton's next series, while blanket coverage on Tornado receivers by Garrett Turner & Carter Weissenfluh (3-tackles) nearly resulted in a big play interception before Hampton relinquished control of the ball to the Hornets.
After a holding penalty, Ward had a couple hard-nosed runs resulting in Hornets 1st downs, getting the ball to the Tornado 3-yd line where Burden got in for his 3rd TD of the 1st half pushing the Hornets 2nd quarter lead to 20 - 0.
Josh Womeldorf's 3rd kick-off of the half baffled the Hampton return men again as Hampton started their 4th posession of the game from mid-field. The Tornados, looking to change their fate, tried running between the tackles, but were met there but linebacker Zach Pope who racked up 3 of his 4 stops on the day in a 5-play sequence leading to halftime with Williamsburg up 20 - 0.
The big lead was short lived however as Hampton took the opening kick off of the 2nd half back for a quick score. Bryant Walker stuffed the try for PAT leaving Williamsburg up 20 - 6.
The ensuing Hampton kick pinned Williamsburg deep at their own 19-yd line. The Tornados appeared ready to capitalize on the change of momentum as Williamsburg struggled to regain footing.
The Hornets bounced back though mustering a 12-play scoring drive that featured Michael Burt collecting a 20-yd pass from Ward to vault the pigskin to the Hampton 20-yd line. A few plays later, Burt hauled in an 8-yd TD pass from Ward putting the Hornets comfortably back on top 26 - 6 well into the 3rd period.
The Williamsburg defense continued to give no ground.
Tyler Neville (4-tackles) and Jeremy Herslow (3-tackles) continued the Hornets relentless pounding of Hampton runners. Hunter Pegram was in on 3-tackles, Chase Dively had 2-stops, and caused a fumble. Ryan Pastirik, Zach Stallings, Gunner Mueller and Tori Roggenbuch were also all in on nice tackles.
Offensively, the Hornets controlled the clock and the ball into the 4th period. Pegram had 4-carries for positive yards behind blockers Jonathon Tarpley and Trent Neville. Pastirik picked up a key 1st down with a hard nosed run up the middle through a hole created by Mickey Smith. And Nicholas Doyle turned in a super run up the middle following Joey Cianciotti's block.
The Hornets now go into a bye week, preparing for their annual game at William & Mary's Zable Stadium against the Williamsburg Gold Hornets on October 10th.
