Relentless Williamsburg Defense Carries Hornets In 12 - 0 Win Over Tri-Citi Hurricanes
The Williamsburg defense played relentlessly against the Tri-Citi Hurricanes keeping the Hornets in the game, until Williamsburg Runningback Hunter Brittain could muscle in for a pair of late Hornet scores in Williamsburg's 12 - 0 road victory in Denbigh.
In 7 Tri-Citi posessions, the Hornets defense forced the Hurricanes off the field in 4 plays or less. Leading the charge was Defensive Lineman Bryant Walker who was in on 8-tackles, and forced several errant passes by pressuring the Tri-Citi QB as he prepared to throw.
Clayton Vinson tallied 5-stops on the day while Defensive Ends Monii Burden (4-tackles) and Brittain (3-tackles) contained the Tri-Citi outside running game by pulling down Hurricane runners for losses on 10 of 16 running plays in the game.
Josh Herlsow added 3 tackles from his linebacker position. Garrett Turner had 3 tackles and recovered a Tri-Citi fumble. Carter Weissenfluh, TJ Davis and Zach Pope also had tackles on the day.
The strong defensive play gave Williamsburg's offense great field position throughout the first half, but the Hornets couldn't capitalize and stayed stuck in neutral during the first two quarters. Five costly offensive penalties for 40-yds stalled any momentum that Williamsburg generated early.
During halftime, the Hornets offense regrouped and put together a punishing 10-play 50-yd scoring drive to open the 2nd half. Blockers Adam O'Neill and Cooper Minor closed up the inside allowing Burden (17-carries for 70-yds) and Cesar Ward (14-carries for 65-yards) to move the ball down the field.
Then, Brittain, in only his 3rd carry of the year, burst up the middle behind blockers Tadic Mielczarek, Michael Burt and Kade Campbell on a 15-yd scoring run. Later in the game, Brittain, making the most of his opportunties, went in untouched from 7-yds out for a 2nd score and 12 - 0 Hornets advantage.
Ryan Pastirik, Zach Stallings and Hunter Pegram had tough-nosed carries for the Williamsburg as well, behind blockers Trent Neville, Tyler Neville and Mickey Smith to help round out the Hornets day.
