Hornets Score Early & Often On The Way To 25 - 6 Win Over Williamsburg Gold

Playing in the collegial back-drop of William & Mary's Zable Stadium, the Hornets scored on 3 of their first 7-offensive plays from scrimmage building a quick 19 - 0 lead, then played workmanlike football through the remaining three quarters of the game en route to a 25 - 6 victory over Williamsburg Gold.

Monii Burden (8-carries / 58-yds) set the tone early with a nifty 33-yd kick-off return to the Gold's 15-yd line, from there, Cesar Ward (4-carries / 65-yds) spun, and broke tackles at the goal line from 14-yds out to get in for the score behind the blocks of Zach Pope and Cooper Minor.

After the Hornets Defense turned the Gold's 1st offensive try aside, Hunter Brittain had a nice 8-yd carry, up the middle behind Adam O'Neill to set up Ward who this time raced in untouched from 27-yds out to give the Hornets a 13 - 0 lead.

On the Hornets next possession, a nice 19-yd pass reception by Carter Weissenfluh set up Burden on his blast up the middle as he out ran the Gold defenders for a super 35-yd TD carry behind blockers Tadic Mielczarek and Kade Campbell putting the Hornets up 19 - 0 at the break.

Defensively Josh Herslow led all Hornets with 5-tackles, and pulled down an interception. Bryant Walker and Burden racked up 4-tackles each while Brittain and Weissenfluh were in on 3-stops each.

Michael Burt had 2-tackles for loss, and broke up a pass play with his quick reflexes, and cornerback Garrett Turner busted up 3-plays for losses in the contest. D-Linemen Josh Womeldorf and Josh Farley both registered tackles in the game as well.

Gold closed the gap to 19 - 6 with a 53-yd TD run by Alex Germain-Minter, but the Hornets answered on their next defensive possession when Burden cleanly fielded a Gold Punt, and ran 30-yds untouched for a TD giving the Hornets a comfortable 25 - 6 cushion late in the 3rd period.

Defensively, Tyler Neville led the 2nd half rush with 4 tackles for loss. Ryan Pastirik racked up 4-stops from his Linebacker position. TJ Davis had 1-tackle, and recovered a Gold fumble and Nick Doyle had 2 crunching hits on Gold backs from his safety position. Jeremy Herslow and Gunner Mueller helped contain the outside edges from any further Gold rushes while Ben Tyler & Joey Cianciotti plugged up the middle.

Offensively, Hunter Pegram had 2 carries for 10-yds while Zach Stallings had a nice run on a reverse, and hauled in a pass from Pastirik for 8-yds. Doyle, Davis, Ty. Neville and Chase Dively also ran the ball well for the Hornets. Tori Roggenbush, Trent Neville, Mickey Smith and Jonathon Tarpley blocked well up front for the backs.

More excitement followed as Hornet "Action" Jackson Weissenfluh zipped into the endzone from 10-yds out on his 1st carry of the year for Williamsburg. Nathan Smith answered for the Gold squad going in from 10-yards to round out the contest.
